Focus Gold creates a union between QuarkXPress and database applications for personalized printing. A designer uses QuarkXPress to create a template for the advertisement or publication. The template can include variable text-insertion points where the appropriate text will be nested. This is similar to the mail merge that can be done in some word-processing applications. In addition to variable text, the designer can also include variable graphics, lines, and boxes.
The designer has to have some understanding of what is in the database in order to design the document and include the appropriate variable elements such as text fields, but the database of information itself might never be seen by the designer. Instead, the designer, as creator of the document, has a sample file of variable data that allows generation of sample documents to check things such as line lengths and text reflow. Having the layout in a QuarkXPress document and the variable data in another, helps minimize file sizes.
Once the page layout is completed, the document is run through an error-checking process to detect design elements that have been used that would not print properly on the selected output device. The template the designer has created is then merged with the data file that was exported from the database. The resulting files are then sent to the RIP and, on from there, to the output device for printing.
